Midyear Meeting

The CTA Midyear Meeting: Your Chance to Help Shape the Industry

During the Midyear Business Meeting the members tour an industry facility, after which the association holds its Annual Business Meeting, during which members discuss pending industry issues, hear reports from standing committees, and vote to fill vacancies on the Board of Directors.

Directors serve a three-year term and may serve up to two consecutive terms. Only voting members are eligible to run as board candidates. To ensure that the Board of Directors reflects the diversity of the membership of the Association, each voting member company may have only one employee, representative, or agent on the board at any one time.

2011 Midyear Meeting: US United Bulk Terminal Tour, New Orleans

The 2011 event featured a tour of the United Bulk Terminal. This impressive facility specializes in the handling of coal and petroleum coke. United’s dry-bulk handling facility located at mile 55 on the Mississippi River, about an hour by car south of New Orleans in Davant, LA. It is one of the largest dry-bulk terminals in the United States offering blending, storage and transfer services.

The terminal services include blending and sampling of product. Export product arrives by inland barge and is either transferred directly to an ocean vessel or put to storage on a soil cement pad. Unlike “midstream” operations, product being direct transferred is sent by the dock system through magnetic separators, and if the customer desires, can be mechanically sampled.

2010 Midyear Business Meeting Goes Underground

The 2010 Midyear Meeting was held in Charleston, the capitol of West Virginia. The event included a welcome reception and dinner on June 16, a tour of an underground mine and a business meeting on June 17 where new board members were elected and changes to industry standards will be discussed.

We’ll publish a more detailed agenda in May.

2008 Midyear Meeting Attendees Tour Coal Transloading Facility

CTA members and nonmembers toured a DTE fuels terminal on the east side of Chicago, IL. This full-service solid fuels terminal provides transportation options for inbound and outbound deliveries, including logistical support.

Members saw incoming trains emptied of their coal, learned how the operators offer solid fuel blends, and observed the loading of the vessel pictured above.

2007 Midyear Meeting Attendees Tour PRB Mine

The 2007 Midyear Meeting included a first for the CTA: a tour of a Powder River Basin coal mine. Those who attended also had the opportunity to network with their colleagues from across the country during a tour of Mt. Rushmore or a round of golf in Deadwood, SD. Also, for the first time nonmembers were allowed to participate in this informative meeting.

Pictured above are some of those who attended the 2007 meeting, which included a tour of Rio Tinto’s Jacobs Ranch Mine in Wyoming.
